Chalking Is a Cause of Paint Failure

Chalking is one of many reasons paint can fail on your home.

Why does paint fail?  We have enumerated various reasons in previous posts regarding this subject.  There are plenty of reasons why the paint on your home breaks down.  One particular cause is called chalking.

Chalking and the resulting problems with paint are described this way:

Chalking is caused by the deterioration of a paint film. The resultant loose powder (chalk) is a barrier to adhesion for most paints. Latex paints in particular will adhere to the chalk, but not to the surface, eventually resulting in paint failure.
In order to remove chalk, your home should be pressure washed with a chemical cleanser designed to specifically remove chalk.  After removing the chalk and before you repaint, you should use a primer to make sure the paint adheres properly.

Rhino Shield Ceramic Coating is comprised of fillers, namely ceramics and elastomeric resin.  Rhino Shield’s water level is less than 25 percent–it is comprised of almost 80 percent solids, making it last much longer than latex paint.
